DAY FIVE: DAY OF VISIONING - Street Blockade & Mural Painting
Thursday, October 29th @ 3PM-6PM
Frank Ogawa/Oscar Grant Plaza - 14th St. & Broadway, Oakland

*MAKE SURE TO WEAR YOUR PAINTING CLOTHES FOR THIS EVENT*

Moving through the emotions of anger, grief and joy may give us the spaciousness to build a beautiful vision beyond our wildest imagination. This work is not only about tearing down the old structures, but of creating something beautiful to replace it.

On this day, we will gather to block the streets and paint a large mural on the street honoring life and building a vision celebrating what Democracy could actually look like. We invite folks to come together to prepare to Choose Democracy and Stop a Coup.

This event is designed to share skills--street mural, songs and nonviolent direct action, and help get our communities organized, strong hearted and ready to take positive action to stop a possible coup. We are preparing for possible need for sustained mass nonviolent direct action, taking over and painting streets, singing and other impactful ways we can assert our people power to stop a coup.

  • STREET MURALING: This is What Democracy Looks Like Street Murals: a number community groups will paint street murals they have designed showing examples and visions of democracy in our communities and we will do one giant DEMOCRACY street mural open to participants. Painting street murals is a participatory, creative way to assert ourselves in public space and is a Bay Area tradition over the last decade by movements for Indigenous sovereignty, climate justice, economic justice and Black Lives Matter.
  • SONGS TO STOP A COUP; We will have songleaders teach and lead songs stop stop a coup, song we can use in the coming weeks and months.

As we get closer and closer to one of the most pivotal election in our lifetime, we know that many of us are feeling anxiety about the result of the election as well as what may happen afterwards. Many of us are planning to take action, especially if there is an attempt at an undemocratic power grab from the current administration.

Rather than sitting in anxiety waiting for something to happen, we are initiating action: gathering in community and deepening our relationships so that we can be ready to respond to whatever may happen.

Deepening Together is a series of gatherings for 10 consecutive days leading into election day, with each day having a different theme.

COVID Safety: We ask all participants to wear a mask at all times, and to practice safe physical distancing during the event. If you have any COVID symptoms, tested positive or have been in recent contact with someone who has, we ask that you stay home in order to protect the safety of everyone else. Masks and sanitizer will be handed out to any who needs it.

Starting on Sunday, October 25th, we will gather each day from 4PM - 6PM (unless otherwise noted) at Frank Ogawa/Oscar Grant Plaza in front of Oakland City Hall.

*Times/Themes subject to change. Please check our website for updates before attending events. Also, please feel free to bring an item to add to our collective altar, which we will be building throughout the 10-days.
