DESCRIPTION:\nHealing Resistance: A Radically Different Response to Harm\nBy Kazu Haga\nBook Release Celebration\nSaturday\, January 18th\n6PM – 8PM \n\nEast Bay Meditation Center\n285 17th Street\nOakland\, CA 94612\nCopies of the book will be available on a donation basis. Copies may also be purchased online at www.parallax.org/healing-resistance\nLight refreshments will be served. Feel free to bring a snack to share!\nActivists and social change agents\, restorative justice practitioners\, faith leaders\, and anybody engaged in social progress and shifting society will find this mindful approach to nonviolent action indispensable. \nNonviolence was once considered the highest form of activism and radical change. And yet its basic truth\, its restorative power\, has been forgotten. In Healing Resistance\, leading Kingian Nonviolence trainer Kazu Haga blazingly reclaims the energy and assertiveness of nonviolent practice (utilized by the Women’s March and Black Lives Matter)\, and proves that nonviolent civil resistance remains the most effective strategy for social change in hostile times. \nWith over 20 years of experience practicing and teaching Kingian Nonviolence\, Haga offers us the practical approach to societal conflict first begun by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement\, which has been developed into a fully workable\, step-by-step training and deeply transformative philosophy. Kingian Nonviolence takes on the timely issues of endless protest and activist burnout\, and presents tried-and-tested strategies for staying resilient\, creating equity\, and restoring peace. \nJoin us to celebrate the official release of this book! \nPraise for Healing Resistance: \n“Kazu Haga’s deep\, nuanced\, and principled commitment to nonviolence has challenged and inspired me and many others who’ve had the privilege of encountering his work.”\n—Michelle Alexander\, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness \n“Kazu Haga reminds us of the power of nonviolence\, building on the work of Gandhi and King and informed by his own life and insight in a way that touches us all today. Haga teaches us that true belonging … is a challenging process that takes constant work and training from the internal to the interpersonal to the institutional. But that the work is worth the reward of building Beloved Community. We owe a debt of gratitude to Haga for his work and words and have in this book a manual for loving and for living nonviolence that will guide and inspire generations to come.”\n—john a. powell\, director of the Othering and Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley and author of Racing to Justice: Transforming Our Concept of Self and Other to Build an Inclusive Society \n“Kazu Haga is a masterful teacher connecting our internal and external experiences: of intending\, of doing\, and of being—living together with care and justice.”\n— Larry Yang\, core teacher at the East Bay Meditation Center\, member of the Spirit Rock Teachers Council\, and author of Awakening Together: The Spiritual Practice of Inclusivity and Community \n“Kazu Haga has written an accessible\, thorough\, and deeply personal introduction to nonviolence as a power for personal and social transformation. He reflects upon common myths about nonviolent resistance\, offers practical insight from his own experiences\, and challenges readers to consider a radical\, healing approach to confronting injustice. An inspiring read.”\n—Erica Chenoweth\, Berthold Beitz Professor in Human Rights and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School and author of Civil Resistance: What Everyone Needs to Know \n“Few people are as grounded in the tenets and traditions of principled nonviolence as Kazu Haga. Any of the thousands of people that Haga has trained in nonviolence can attest to the great wisdom\, care and talent he brings to his craft. He is informed by a rich spiritual practice\, deep practical experience in social movement organizing\, and years of careful research into nonviolent campaigns. It is a rare combination that he brings to his writing\, and we can all be grateful that Kazu has given us this offering.\n– Paul Engler\, coauthor of This is an Uprising: How Nonviolent Revolution is Shaping the 21st Century \nIf anyone ever thought that enough has already been written about nonviolence\, they haven’t read Kazu Haga’s book. What this book accomplishes is nothing short of making nonviolence accessible\, hopefully to many more people that have previously engaged with it. This is a clear and friendly book\, never compromising depth for simplicity\, nor losing courage because of the core optimism woven through it. We learn about Haga himself\, about the world\, about power\, about conflict\, and about how all of us can increase our capacity to respond effectively to a world gone awry.”\n– Miki Kashtan\, author of Reweaving Our Human Fabric: Working Together to Create a Nonviolent Future \n URL:https://eastpointpeace.org/event/healing-resistance-book-release-celebration/ LOCATION:East Bay Meditation Center\, 285 17th St.\, Oakland\, CA\, 94612\, United States END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20200202T143000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20200202T173000 DTSTAMP:20191221T214717 CREATED:20191206T202501Z LAST-MODIFIED:20191209T200050Z UID:2393-1580653800-1580664600@eastpointpeace.org SUMMARY:How We Win w George Lakey - Berkeley\, CA DESCRIPTION:How We Win\nA Guide to Nonviolent Direct Action Campaigning\nSunday\, February 2nd\n2:30PM – 5:30 PM\nCost: $20-80 Sliding Scale Donation\nLimited space available.\n“It’s a good time to take a fresh look at what has worked in times of trouble\, and share what we have learned about successful campaigning that gives hope for the future.” – George Lakey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese times call for new and creative tactics in order to make changes to the status quo. \nExplore: What makes nonviolent direct action campaigns relevant now?
