FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23
5:30-7:30 PM (PACIFIC)
DESCRIPTION
Revisionist history books tell us that the Montgomery Bus Boycott found its beginnings because ‘Rosa Parks was tired.’ The truth is Rosa Parks and many of her contemporaries studied direct action for racial change at the Highlander Institute. These narratives attempt to undermine the truth that many of the most effective social change movements have been strategic, educated and tactical.
Join Xan for a workshop covering direct action basics such as choosing a target, setting realistic goals and components of direct action strategy through the lens of creating healing for ourselves and our communities.
THE SPEAKER
Xan West (she/her) is a black queer femme mama. She was born and raised in Oakland and has over 25 years in direct action and social change movements. She first became involved in direct action in resistance to Oakland’s anti-cruising laws directed at criminalizing youth of color as well as anti-globalization mobilizations. Xan has been a part of many direct action formations including Anarchist People of Color, black.seed and Second Acts. She has been active in movements for police accountability, queer rights and transformative justice. She believes in creating movements of people that are healing together.
