All of our community workshops are run on a Gift Economics model, which means we do not charge a fee. The advanced trainings are a significant time commitment for the lead trainers, and will probably require that we fly out an additional trainer from out of town. Please come ready to support the work as much as you are able. Read more here.

What

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day Weekend not only be remembering the work of the past, but by maintaining the legacy today and into tomorrow!

This advanced 5-day workshop will certify participants as Assistant Trainers in the philosophy of Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation, a training philosophy that is the direct result of, and the final marching orders of Dr. King. Assistant facilitators are certified to present roughly 60% of the materials covered in the two-day Introduction to Kingian Nonviolence workshop.

Participants who pass the course will be able to join the team of East Point trainers, and help conduct work in the community, county jails, state prisons and other places where we work.

The first two-days of the Advanced Training will be our next two-day, introductory workshop. These two days are required for all participants, even if they have previously gone through a two-day workshop before. The next two days will be learning and practicing various training modules, with the final day being exams and final presentations.

Through role plays, small group activities, readings, video presentations, mini-lectures and discussions, we explore topics such as:

  • The definitions of violence and nonviolence
  • An analysis of the different types and levels of conflict, and how they escalate and deescalate
  • The history of the Civil Rights Movement and some of Dr. King’s philosophies
  • The principles (the will) Kingian Nonviolence, how to view and transform conflict
  • The steps (the skill) of Kingian Nonviolence, how to engage with conflict and organize a campaign

Whether you are an organizer working for social change, a teacher trying to change the culture of your school or simply an individual trying to deal with the conflicts in your personal life, each person will walk away from our workshops with new skills and a new perspective.
