Songs To Stop A Coup

Saturday, October 24th
5:00 - 6:30 PM Pacific Time

This training is about learning and practicing songs to defend elections, protect results and stop coups. Imagine being in the streets for upcoming actions, what will we be singing? Let's make sure we're ready! We will learn short new poignant chants and songs that will keep us grounded in our purpose, connected to each other and committed to our vision. This is about more than music! We want to sing with you because it's strategic. We want to sing with you because music can help us stay safe and strong, bold and powerful. This offering is for anyone and everyone who is preparing to take action in these times, even if you're not a singer, join us, experience the way music can connect us and the way connection can strengthen and protect us.

My name is Lu Aya and I’m from a Bronx-based crew called The Peace Poets.  Over the last 12 years, we've written hundreds of songs and chants and worked in direct relationships with organizers on all kinds of issues to maximize our impact by utilizing the power of music.  We’ve composed songs for racial, climate, migrant, and economic justice that have gone viral both online and more notably, in direct actions.  We’ve been organizers, we’ve been artists, and we’ve spent years innovating how to be both at the same time in the most powerful and respectful way possible.  That’s why we’re here. Because we stand with the giants who sang folk and gospel and rock and Hip Hop and punk and spirituals to ground and inspire movements for liberation – and in that proud radical beautiful tradition, we’re committed to infusing our movements with music.

All events at the East Point Peace Academy are offered on a Gift Economy. This means that there is no fee to register, and everybody is welcome to attend regardless of their ability to pay. An opportunity will be offered to participants to give gifts to support the work of our organization and to support the facilitators. No amount is too small or too large.
